Asif:

Asif was in his happy place, sneaking around looking for the ungodly with what even his wife consistently referred to as his girlfriend. He’d used a rifle like this before the upgrades to fifty cal, but this wasn’t actually his Army weapon.

The Army had phased out the Army Accuracy International AWM sniper rifle before the crash, during the period the government back home was reversing and scrapping race relations laws. He’d known his family could be targeted, so Asif had taken some precautions. Snipers were sneaky as a default, so liberating this rifle and a substantial supply of Lapau .338 Magnum rounds hadn’t been too difficult. Getting everything home took help from several friends.

Asif had been married long enough for his wife to get the real situation past the censor, so when the Army cutbacks started, he’d taken early discharge and come home to help out. Their small community of Gurkhas had ridden out the first chaos, then the conquest of the Park, without openly interfering. Now they’d agreed it was time to come out of the shadows, to stand up and fight. Asif smiled to himself, because in his case that meant going into the shadows, and definitely not standing up.

Parking his electric motorbike and shrugging on his ghillie suit, Asif disappeared into the ruins, ghosting towards the Children of Cain. Passing the Park’s original defence line, strengthened sections of ruins meant to look untouched from the east, he found the Prophet’s scouts. He let them pass, holding fire until he had more valuable targets. A couple of shots meant the scouts had found the defences—Asif hoped the gangsters had listened to Jer and there weren’t many defenders.

Watching the first attackers, Asif couldn’t find any targets, people obviously in charge. Most looked terrified, with several diving into cover at the first shot, but shouting from behind drove them forward. Rifles began to fire towards the Park defenders, which was what Asif had been waiting for. He killed four riflemen, puzzled when the advance stopped instead of charging forward.

The four lines of fire and flame that appeared, lancing out one after the other to strike the strongpoints in the centre, came as a complete shock, as did the explosions when they struck. With a roar, the centre of the Prophet’s army surged forward towards what would be shattered, demoralised fighters. There were only a couple of shots in reply, which reinforced the impression. After a short delay, two more missiles struck the flank strongpoints, one near enough for Asif to see the amount of damage.

When he laid his sights on the impact site, Asif was reassured. The gangs had listened to Jer, so there were only a couple of bodies.

The attack was washing right over the empty positions, which should give Asif a chance at the commanders, but he had to turn it down. Jer and the gang leaders had to be told about those missiles. As he broke contact, running back to his bike, Asif worked through what he’d seen.
